Avoid saying these 10 things to your kids

We always need to be conscious what we say to our children but we need to be mindful of especially these 10 things. During this crisis where we are spending all the time with them, it becomes imperative to check our behaviour around them.

We are already exhausted from all the extra work that fell in our kitty.

On top of that, kids seeking our extra attention or asking the same question for 100th time, may drive us off the cliff.

No matter how occupied or tired, we are, we should never say these 10 things to our kids:

  1. Leave me alone. Instead tell them to give you few minutes alone as you are not feeling well.
  2. Stop crying immediately. Instead try and understand the reason why they are upset. It is important to allow them to show their emotions.
  3. I am busy. Instead ask them if it is not urgent then wait for 5 minutes or a given time and then you will get back to them. Be sure to fulfil your promise and listen to them.
  4. Stop Fighting. Instead of yelling at them to stop fighting, ask them the reason behind disagreement and try to find a solution.
  5. Don’t eat that or you’ll get fat. Instead of forcing them to eat healthy, make them understand why it is important for them to have a nutritious meal.
  6. If you don’t clean your room, you will be in big trouble. Instead of threatening them to do something, explain them the situation and how everyone needs to work together to be happy.
  7. I am disappointed in you. Instead of telling them that you are disappointed or it’s not what your expected out of them, tell them to avoid doing it as their actions might hurt them or others.
  8. Because, I said so. Don’t just tell them to do it instead explain why it is required.
  9. Don’t make me repeat myself. You might have told them 10 times to not do something or rather do something in a certain way. But telling them again isn’t cost you any extra breath as a parent. After all that’s what our job is.
  10. Don’t worry, everything is alright. Don’t push aside their concerns, address them. Explain them that as a parent, you will do everything to keep them safe. Our government and doctors are working day and night to fight this pandemic. At the end of the day, everything will be alright.

How we speak to our children influences their way to view the world and themselves. In this time of crisis, we should speak to them in healthy manner to make them feel supported and loved.
